The exact amount of fall depends on the surface material, the layout, and where the water has to end up — there is no universal number — but the direction is non-negotiable: away from the structure, toward the outlet.

Permeable surfaces

Permeable pavers and porous paving attack the problem at its source by letting water soak through the surface instead of running off it. Less runoff means less to collect and redirect. The catch is that they depend on the base and the soil beneath draining well; over heavy clay their advantage shrinks, and they may still need an underdrain or outlet.

Directing to an outlet

Whatever the drain collects has to go somewhere lower that can accept it — daylight on a slope, a dry well in draining soil, or a storm connection where permitted. This is the same rule that governs every drainage method, and it is covered below because it is the one people forget.

Common mistakes

  • Draining toward the house. The cardinal sin of hardscape. Paving that pitches back at the foundation delivers concentrated water exactly where you least want it. Slope has to run away from the structure.
  • No outlet. A channel drain with nowhere lower to pipe to fills up and overflows across the paving in the first real storm. Sort the discharge before you install the drain.
  • Dumping the runoff onto a narrow lawn strip. Sending a driveway’s worth of water onto a few feet of grass just moves the erosion and mud a step over. The water needs a real route, not a marginally different victim.
  • Undersizing the outlet pipe. A drain that collects more than its pipe can carry backs up even though the drain itself looks fine.
  • Never cleaning the grate. Channel drains catch leaves and grit along their whole length; a clogged grate sheds water back over the surface.
  • Assuming permeable pavers need no outlet. Over slow soil they can still saturate and need an underdrain. The base and subsoil have to actually drain.
  • Discharging to the street without checking. Routing driveway runoff into the public right of way or a storm system can be regulated. Confirm what is allowed locally first.
