Do Gutter Guards Work in Snow and Ice?

The short answer

Gutter guards do not stop ice dams, which come from roof heat, and in cold climates ice can form on or under a guard and be harder to clear. Some rigid designs shed snow better than others, but no guard is a winter cure.

Gutter guards do not solve winter. They do not stop ice dams, because ice dams come from heat escaping through your roof, not from what is in the gutter. Worse, in a cold climate ice can form on top of a guard or seep underneath and freeze in the trough, where it is harder to clear than in an open gutter. Where ice dams actually come from

An ice dam is a ridge of ice at the edge of the roof. It forms in a specific sequence:

  1. Heat leaks from the living space into the attic and warms the underside of the roof deck.
  2. Snow on the warm upper roof melts and trickles down toward the eaves.
  3. The eaves overhang unheated space, so they stay cold. The meltwater refreezes there.
  4. Ice builds into a dam. Water backing up behind it can work under shingles and into the house.

What ice does to a guarded gutter

Guards change how ice behaves, and not always for the better.

  • Ice on the surface. Meltwater running off the roof can refreeze on a solid or mesh guard, sealing it over. Water then has nowhere to drain and sheets off the edge.
  • Ice under the guard. Water that gets past the surface can freeze inside the trough. Now the ice is trapped beneath a fixed cover, and you cannot reach it without removing the guard.
  • Frozen-in guards. Once ice locks a guard to the gutter, prying it loose risks bending the gutter, tearing the guard, or lifting fasteners at the roof edge.

An open gutter that ices up is at least accessible. A guarded gutter that ices up hides the problem and resists a clean fix. That is the trade-off cold-climate homeowners rarely hear at the sales pitch.

Rigid metal guards generally survive snow load and shed better than a soft screen that sags or a foam block that soaks up meltwater and turns into an ice cube. But “better” is relative — a severe freeze overwhelms all of them.

What not to do on an icy roof

Stay off icy roofs and ladders. Chipping ice with a hammer or hatchet, climbing a ladder onto a frozen roofline, or blasting a guard with hot water are all ways to get hurt or damage the roof. Ladders slip on ice, and a fall from the eave is serious. If ice is causing interior leaks, call a professional instead of climbing.
