Where each one fails

Neither is universal, and each fails in its own way.

A dry well fails when the soil will not cooperate. In heavy clay or where the water table sits high, it fills faster than it can empty and backs up toward the inlet after every rain. This is not a smaller-dry-well problem; it is the wrong tool for that soil. A percolation test — digging a hole, filling it, and timing how fast the water drops — is the only way to know before you build. A French drain fails more slowly and less predictably. Over years, silt can migrate into the gravel and fabric and roots can invade the wet trench, and because it is buried it is very hard to service — a failed French drain is often a rebuild rather than a repair.
