Going without gutters is not really about removing the collection step, it is about moving that step from the roof edge down to the ground.
Whether a house can manage without gutters depends on overhang width, soil, slope, and climate, all of which vary enormously. Treat the options below as a toolkit, not a universal recipe, and lean toward more drainage in wet or freeze-prone regions.
The single most important factor is where the ground slopes. If the soil around the house falls away from the walls, gravity does most of the work of moving roof water off toward the yard. If it slopes toward the house, no drip-edge trick will save you.
Getting the fall right is the foundation of every gutterless approach. Under the gravel, many homes add a buried perforated pipe or a plastic dispersal channel that carries the collected water to a safe outlet.
This is the closest thing to a gutter that lives in the ground. A trench under the drip line, filled with gravel around a perforated pipe, catches the falling water and pipes it away to daylight, a dry well, or a rain garden. It collects the runoff just like a trough would, only at ground level.

Most gutterless homes that work well use two or three of these together, for example wide overhangs plus a gravel drip strip plus grading into a swale.
Some situations really do call for gutters. A basement or crawl space, a walkout or entry directly under the drip line, clay soil that sheds water, a steep lot draining toward the house, or a cold climate with ice at the eaves all raise the stakes. In those cases a ground-only system has to be built carefully, and often a gutter is simpler and safer.
The honest answer is that gutterless works best on the houses least likely to have water problems anyway, those on well-drained, sloping lots with generous overhangs and no below-grade living space. The more of those advantages you lack, the harder the ground has to work, and the more a gutter starts to look like the easy path. Diverting rain off a roof without gutters is entirely possible, but it is a ground-drainage project, not a roofing one. Give the concentrated drip line a place to land, a gravel strip or a buried collector, make sure the soil falls away from the house, and hand the water off to a swale or rain garden.
