How to Grade a Yard for Drainage

It breaks the run of the hill, collecting flow partway down and piping it to an outlet instead of letting it continue to the base. Interceptors are especially useful directly above the thing you are protecting — a house, a patio, or a retaining wall. Slowing and redirecting slope runoff is drainage — it reduces how much water collects against a structure. Keeping the inside of that structure dry is waterproofing, a separate job. And wherever you route slope water, it still needs a real, lower outlet and must not simply be dumped onto a lower neighbor. Discharge can be regulated, so check local rules.

A slope hands you two things every drain wants: a clear direction for water to travel, and enough fall to carry it to a lower outlet without pumps or mechanisms. So the goal is not to erase the slope’s fall but to control how water uses it — slow enough to protect the soil, directed enough to protect the house, and aimed at a genuine outlet at the end.
